So...my aim for this was to be a bit of a tip of the cap to the early 90's Williams Renault F1 cars so the colour was going to be blue and yellow like the FW15 and FW15 cars.
This is written after the fact so the mostly complete parts list is:
Flyingwings Venturi EVO FPV
~4m of laminanting film from Flyingwings
Hitec HS5645MG servos (x2)
O.S. OMA-3820-1200 Brushless Motor
YEP 100A ESC
APC 9X5 E prop
Eagle Tree Vector flight controller
Airspeed sensor for above
ImmersionRC EzUHF 4ch Rx
Cat6 S/FTP cable for wiring
Turnigy Low-Noise BEC
Turnigy Nano-Tech 3300mAh 4S batteries (x2)
XT60 Y connector for 2 batteries in parallel
M3 stainless bolts with nyloc nuts for the motor mount
Securitycamera2000 PZ0420 camera
ImmersionRC 700mw 2.4GHz VTx
2.4GHz skew antenna from Gav
All the inital parts laid out
The fist task I undertook was to assemble the ply centre section. I carefully cut out the laser cut parts and glued them together with thin CA. In hindsight it could have been better to sand off the charred bits before I put it together but it wasn't too hard to do assembled.
I used regular Halfords paint which in the case of the blue is Vauxhall Regatta Blue which was close enough. For the yellow I chose Fiat Broom Yellow. Also with white primer on the wood.
The painting of the centre section and bay cover went well.
Then as the bay cover was relatively flat and without any awkward corners I had my first experience of laminating which went well.
I also laminated the bottom foam section and test fitted it all together. Looking good!
I masked the wings up and gave a few thin coats.
Offering it all up together was starting to give an idea of what it was going to look like and I was happy with that!
Next step was to run a length of shielded AV cable to the camera at the front from the electronics bay.
Just putting the motor on the mount to see what it'll look like clearance wise.
There was a slight issue with one of the plastic bits of the control horn missing and I got an extra clevis but Rob at Flyingwings was great and got the missing part off to me ASAP.
A lot then happened which I didn't take so many photos of. Made the cutaways for the servos, Rx, VTx and cables and dry fitted them. also painted and laminated the elevons.
Covered the wings which went really well
I then started to finalise things like installing the control horns on the elevons, installed the Vector, made up cables and added connectors. I glued the wings on with UHU POR and added a dollop or two of Gorilla glue into the wing spar channels.
I did have some slight issues with the ESC, it doesn't seem to like having its end points set with the programming card, the throttle was all over the place and sometimes even locked the ESC in an error mode. This was easily fixed by setting the throttle end points using the normal put the throttle stick all the way up, power up the ESC, when it beeps lower the throttle to the stop and waiting for the beeps, this worked flawlessly.
Last night I set up the rates and expo on my Tx
Low: 40 rates and 40% expo
Med: 70 rates and 40% expo
High: 100 rates and 40% expo
I'm just waiting for time and good weather to maiden it now, oh and a Uno 2400 VRx which isn't in stock anywhere.
